Getting a Good Night's Sleep

You've put in a hard day's work, whether it is going to a job or being a stay at home mom or dad. You've worked and/or cleaned the house, taken care of your kid(s), cooked dinner, etc. Now it's time to finally crawl into bed. Your body aches, your mind is racing and every time you look at the clock you have that much less time to sleep! If this describes you, then here are a few tips to help you get some rest:
1. Make sure your bedroom is comfortable, quiet and dark. Keeping your bedroom clean and organized can help you relax. Also, no matter how much you love your pets, it's best to keep them off the bed because they move around a lot at night.
2. Try to create a routine before bed time. Slow down before going to bed, by reading a magazine, aroma therapy, or take a warm bath.
3. Say no to that cigarette before bed. Even though you may feel this helps you wind down, nicotine is a stimulant.
4. Put those alcoholic and/or caffeinated drinks away at least 4 hours before bed time. These could still be in your system when it's time to wind down causing restless sleep. Even though alcohol can cause a drowsy effect, it can also lead to restless sleep.
5. Resist the urge to nap during the day. An hour nap in the middle of the day can throw off your sleep schedule. Of course if there are extenuating circumstances such as a newborn that gets up a lot during the night, then obviously you need to take the opportunity to sleep when you can!
6. Time your exercise and eating. You don't want to go to bed on an empty stomach but not a full one either because that can cause indigestion. Also don't work out right before bed, it's hard to wind down to get a good night's sleep with an elevated heart rate.
7. It's best to reserve the bed room for sleeping, not watching tv or talking about emotional issues or working.
8. Make sure your bed is a place you look forward to being. You can do this by having a mattress that feels good to you. Buy pleasing sheets and comforter or duvet and don't forget comfy pillows.
Lack of sleep can cause accidents, affect your relationships, health and mental state. Getting a good nights sleep is essential for feeling refreshed and alert during the day.
